Kilogram (abbreviated kg) is the unit of mass in the International System of Units. Not to be confused with kilogram-force system mkfs. Basic single unit kilogram is formed with a prefix. Thus, although according to one kilograms prefix kilo is 1,000 grams, gram is not considered fundamental unit, but kilograms. Initially kilogram was defined as the mass of a cubic decimetre of distilled water at 4 C and normal atmospheric pressure.

But because the definition of pressure calls for mass unit ( "vicious circle"), in formal terms this is not a correct definition. The correct definition for the kilogram is the mass standard and Measures Bureau kept in Sevres units. It is not correct to use the kilogram unit for the weight or force in general. The weights and, in general, the forces measured in Newtons (N). For the measurement of forces is used sometimes called kilogram-force unit, designated "KGF" equal to the weight of a mass of 1 kg to the earth's surface. 1 kg , 9.8 N.
